4th/5th Science 4/28-5/4

General Information: Now that we have identified how plants and animals have structures which help them survive in their particular ecosystem, we will be spending the next few weeks identifying how energy flows through an ecosystem. Along with the typical work, I will also have optional activities which are intended to be fun and will not be graded.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Lesson 1: California’s Cash Crops

    • Materials:
      • “California’s Green Gold” reading
      • Visual Aids
      • California Commodities pages of the Student Workbook
    • Instructions:
      • On a piece of paper list your favorite foods
      • Read “California’s Green Gold” and if one of your favorite foods is mentioned in the reading circle it on your paper.
      • Complete the California Commodities Workbook pages . Use your reading and Visual Aids to help you answer the Questions. Notice that question 6 pertains to the visual aids.

Thursday and Friday

Lesson 2: Energy for Survival

    • Materials:
      • Ecosystems Description Pages
      • Workbook Pages: Meeting Survival Needs and Energy for Survival
    • Instructions:
      • On a piece of paper take 2 minutes to write down as many organisms, living things, you can think of.
      • On the same paper answer the following Question: what do plants need to survive? What do animals need to survive?, where does the energy needed for plants to grow come from?
      • Next work on the Meeting Survival Needs Inventory student workbook page using the Freshwater Streams Ecosystem description page or the Redwood Forest Ecosystem description page and the Mojave Desert ecosystem inventory as an example.
      • After you finish the inventory ask yourself: How do these organisms meet their survival needs, Where do they get what they need? How are living and nonliving things different?, What are some ways humans and other organisms are similar and different?
      • Complete the Energy for Survival workbook page.

Remember all you need to do is read the publication, complete the Think and Review Questions in Google Classroom or on paper, and take the test on the Studies Weekly site or on paper.
